Stop hitting yourself!

You now, as I listen almost indecently to John Vanderslice’s White Wilderness and continue to marvel at all things great and small, I catch myself recalling the often ignored sensation of being alone.  It’s not alone in the vein of loneliness as much as understanding that we aren’t born to be anything but this state, ultimately.  Look, I don’t want to be “that guy” at the end of the bar everyone avoids talking to ‘cause he’s got “perspective”, but we do need to address this at one point or another in our little path.  Here are a handful of phrases I’m rapidly tiring of:

1. The only way out is through

2. You come into this life with nothing, and that's how you'll leave

3. The Lord works in mysterious ways

Now that we’ve all thrown up a bit in our mouths, I feel we need to take these glib platitudes and misquotes (Churchill never said the first one) and place them where they rightly belong – up me bum.  There are lots of ways out – like turning around and going back, or around (prepositions abound)!  We bring loads into the world with us, and there’s nothing mysterious about letting us choose our own respective fates.  Not to be “that guy”, but come on.  Surely we can do better.

Let’s do this, LIVE.  Also, great indie music.
